Dave Grohl offered a preview of his upcoming mini-documentary Play during his appearance on today’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
The 23-second clip highlighted seven versions of himself playing the 23-minute instrumental track in unison – a process Dave dove into “really just to see if I could pull it off”.
The entire session took three days and of all the parts, he said the piano was the hardest and it took six hours to get one straight track: “I’ve got a room full of guys filming it and every time i’d make a mistake, i’d just be like, ‘Guys, i’m so sorry!'”.
Along with the song, the mini-documentary will be prefaced by the story of budding young musicians learning to play, and the production is teaming up with music education organizations to support their creative development.
During his visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Dave also promoted Cal Jam and gifted Jimmy the stand-in decapitated head used during Foo Fighters’ jam with Alice Cooper on the show in 2017, which Dave kept in his house afterwards and used to creep out his kids and housekeeper (as one does).
Play will be released on August 10 and pre-sales including vinyl/shirt bundles are available from the Roswell Films website.
