Session Information
Whilst Nirvana was in Brazil in 1993 for two large stadium shows they secretly booked time in a local studio to work on some new material, mostly songs that would end up on their third studio album 'In Utero'. Towards the end of the session, the band decided to have some fun, recording a cover of the Terry Jacks classic ‘Seasons in The Sun’, the trio also switching up their regular instruments which found Grohl playing bass. Before that, though Grohl recorded a track by himself.
He would record all instruments on a partial cover of the song ‘Onward into Countless Battles', originally by the Swedish Death Metal band Unleashed. Vocals were also recorded but rather than attempt to match the deep, heavy vocals of the original, Grohl instead just grunted the word ‘Meat’ several times over, with Kurt Cobain also joining in the fun on backing vocals. This led to the song commonly being mislabeled as simply “Meat” or “Dave’s Meat Song”, with Universal even planning to release it as an original composition on the 2004 Nirvana box-set ‘With the Lights Out’. Grohl caught wind of the plans and made it clear it was, in fact, a cover, and the song was therefore not released officially. It does, however, circulate among fans.
