Session Information
As part of their 1995 European tour Foo Fighters were booked to record tracks for the popular BBC Radio 1 Evening Session programme. This session would be the very first the band as a four piece had recorded together in a studio since forming. Five songs were recorded during their day at the studio.
Two of the tracks, 'Alone + Easy Target' and 'Floaty' were new, full band recordings of songs Grohl had recorded alone and released on the 'Foo Fighters' album six months earlier. The third track was the quick and dirty Angry Samoans cover 'Gas Chamber' which the band had recently started playing in live show. The final track was at the time a new song, 'Up In Arms', although it had already received its live debut a couple of months earlier.
The début recording session for the band went off without any significant problems, the quartet speeding through the five songs with just two takes of each before they were happy with the results.Later in the evening the band were still at the studio and linked through live to Steve Lamacq at the BBC Radio 1 Studios.
Dave participated in a brief interview with Lamacq, briefly discussing how the session went earlier in the day. "We didn't wanna put in too much new stuff 'cause these sessions are notorious for being bootlegged" said Grohl when asked about how many songs they had recorded not already featured on the album.Following the interview the band then played two songs live on air directly from the studio.
They first launched into 'Winnebago' before transitioning into 'Wattershed', something that the band had been doing during live shows at the time. The five songs recorded earlier in the day were broadcast during subsequent 'Evening Session' broadcasts over the following weeks, although it is not known which of the two takes of each song were used. Three tracks, 'Alone + Easy Target', 'Floaty' and 'Gas Chamber' were also officially released as B-Sides to various singles.
