Following release and touring of their second album ‘Rated R’ Queens Of The Stone Age parted ways with their drummer Gene Trautmann. Dave Grohl had long been a fan of the band and had known frontman Josh Homme since the early 90s. He had wanted to feature on their second record but with Trautmann now out of the picture the road was clear for him to help with recording for their next record. He first recorded with Queens in October 2001, laying down initial drum tracks for many of the songs and returned to the studio in April 2002 after Homme had decided some of the tracks needed more work.
In the end, Grohl drummed on all songs of ‘Songs For The Deaf’ except for ‘You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire’ which still featured Trautmann. For this short time, Grohl was effectively the permanent drummer in the band, playing live shows with them between March and July 2002. The album was released in August 2002.
