Foo Fighters were due to headline the opening day of festival on the main stage at 20:30 local time however at approximately 18:15 an unprecedented severe thunderstorm wreaked havoc on the festival grounds, with heavy rain and winds recorded at around 100mph. Smaller stages were completely destroyed, trees were uprooted and many other structures such as light towers and video screens were also destroyed. Five people were killed and more than 140 injured. In the immediate aftermath of the storm organisers decided to cancel the remainder of the entire festival, including the Foo Fighters set, although the full cancellation was not announced until the morning of the 19th to avoid a mass exodus from the site, potentially obstructing medical care.
